QuickPWN translation

I just applied some corrections and some improvements to the german translation of QuickPWN – the current translation is a desaster and the new version had some minor glitches. Hope it helps. :-)

iPhone Contacts – workaround

I managed to get around the “shuffled contact details” issue by simply avoiding Outlook -> iTunes -> iPhone synchronization. Instead, I now use the WLAN at home in order to gain direct access to my Exchange account, which pushes all changes directly to the phone – this makes everything easier to handle anyway, so why use the old-fashioned wired way. :-)

About the iPhone rants

I announced positive reports about the iPhone in the last post, and they will come. My aggression simply arose from the fact that – seen from a business perspective – the iPhone lacks a lot of common sense features. I know that the iPhone itself has a lot of capabilities (e.g. SMS outbox, single SMS delete etc.) that are hidden behind the easy-to-use-GUI. But is it really necessary to put all this into hiding from where it can only be revealed by 3rd party payware? Couldn’t Apple just have put an “I’m a true expert user” switch somewhere? :-) Just my two point five cents.

iPhone SMS and Contacts – epic fail

Bear in mind that I’m still testing the iPhone 2G with firmware 2.2 against the Nokia N73. I took a closer look at SMS and Contacts. Here are the results:

iPhone versus Nokia N73

A friend of mine recently gave me his girlfriends used iPhone 2G so that I can test it in order to make my decision about the next company mobile phone. So far, I’ve been using a Nokia N73 for my daily needs, which performed okay overall, but had some major sux0r problems – classic Symbian problems – any questions?

Examples of N73 failure:

  • The phonebook took hours to open, in spite of being filled with just about 50 contacts
  • The camera wouldn’t work any more because of some electrical problem with the slider
  • The phone said “out of memory” at least once a day because applications are NOT closed if you push the red button, but keep running in the background instead. For some time, this is not too much of a problem as long as you’re patient, but sooner or later a phone reboot was necessary.

Additionally, Nokia PC Sync would crash EVERY time it had synchronized the phone with the computer.

I have now used the iPhone with the 2.2 firmware for a couple of days, and so far I have to say: brilliant work, Apple! The thing simply works, it has a very good high-resolution display, it’s fast, it’s WLAN-capable, and the touchscreen really makes it fun to work with the device.

There are some downsides though, of which I will list the most annoying ones: (the rest is reducing itself quickly while I’m getting used to the way the phone works)

  • The SMS application is complete crap imho because it’s not possible to delete a single SMS. I’m forced to use the dialog view. What if I want to keep just one single SMS, e.g. with an address or other information in it?
  • The battery lifetime is a practical joke, although the battery lasts for a pretty long time if you don’t do stuff like gaming on the iPhone
  • The quality of speech is not even nearly as great as that on Nokia phones. Nokia – in my opinion – is simply the best company when it comes to reception and speech quality. If you are in a noisy environment with your iPhone, it gets very hard to understand anything, because the audio frequencies seem unbalanced. Up to now, I’m under the impression that the iPhone gives speech some sort of hollow touch – even ladies sound like men on that phone :-)

The overall impression is a balanced mix of “cool” and “uncool”, while “cool” is a little ahead at the moment because the iPhone is simply a nice thing to play around with – especially after jailbreaking, which I will post about later. I’m happy that I can test it before making my decision, and I will try to re-check above annoyances with a 3G model.
